Miles Davis boxes the Acid Mothers and we all hallucinate 5 star music!

Miles with banana in his pants and horn to his lips.
Miles Davis: The Jack Johnson Sessions - original release 1970 box set release 2003 ***** The very first time I heard this album...oh, when I bought it on lp, maybe 20 years ago...I've always considered it a classic.

Listening to the box set.....no reason to change my mind...in fact it makes me realize how fucking intense this album is...heavy...rocks hard...funky...

what's not to love???????????????

Well, maybe not Miles himself...but that's another story!

I first saw this at the Oakville Public Library (carrying the box set...awesome! of course I got it out and listened to it) but just recently got a copy (Randy!!!) and it blows me away every time. All the musicians are flying man...soaring...

takes me to another place
another atmosphere
another breath

soaring...to the
breath of jazz
filtered through rock
and funk
and classical
and put it all together
and you have
Miles Electric.

Another Note: I have "Miles Electric" now on dvd, but haven't had a chance yet to peruse it. When I do you know I'll babble about it. Also got "The Miles Davis Story"...looking forward to that one too!!

i wanna be an acid mother i wanna be an acid mother...
Acid Mothers Temple: Mantra of Love (2004) ***** I got this from amazon not too long ago, and also "New Geocentric World" (2001), and acid mothers
are magnificent
masters of music manipulation

listen to the "circle" the "arc" of the music.

The music floats by and makes a 30 minute song seem only half that long. Love Cotton Casino's singing....

Absolutely beautiful beautiful music
experimental
yet traditional

I need to dive into more acid.....

3 dollar headphones rock, Ash Ra Tempel are the best and who really is P U N K?

Picture courtesy of Cassandras Eye. It's about noise and electricity people!!
Here are some new bands that Harvey Dog has been checking out from the package sent by Randy. Randy!!!!!!!!!! Incredible stuff. I got so many cds that I've only had a chance to listen to them at most 2 times...if that. But with my new $3 headphones, I'm listening to lots at work! Gotta get caught up.

Psychic Ills - great stuff...impressed right away.

Gris Gris - both their cds, "gris gris" and "for the season"...both incredible....these guys stood out to me immediately. i've listened to both cds twice. gris gris web page

Six Organs of Admittance - when i listened to this at work it hit me more than the first time i heard it...[listened to it again since i wrote this...sounded even better!]...great stuff

I have watched the first 1 hour 10 minutes of Punk: Attitude a documentary by Don Letts, and it's been quite enjoyable. The main problem I have with music docs like this...is that you see a 10 second clip and you wish like a motherfucker you could see the WHOLE FUCKING CLIP!!!

I mean...that clip of Lou singing "Waiting for my Man" with that haircut!? I mean...I want the whole clip!

The New York Dolls on Musik Laden! Live on German TV! I have a number of performances on music dvds of bands on Musik Laden (inlcuding MC5!), but not this performance. And it looks awesome.

Suicide are a band I've been meaning to get into for years...and it's about time...their live show looked absolutely incredible and intense and brave...

What's with John Cooper Clarke's teeth?

The Buzzcocks with Howard Devoto still in the band looked great. Always loved The Buzzcocks.

I've always meant to listen to more of those no-wave bands. Especially James Chance, Lydia Lunch (I didn't buy a cd of hers I saw for months at some great used cd store, whose name I can't fucking remember, while living in Oakville - I even had it in my hand twice to buy, but never did much to my regret) and now after this movie Theoritical Girls and DNA.

I'm looking forward to watching the rest. I'll report in later. Over and Out

motherfucker.

Funkadelic teaches us about life and shakes our booties too!!!

Dr. Clintonstein is created and the funk shall never be the same.
***
Funkadelic
***

Introduction:
George Clinton & The P-Funk All-Stars - Toronto 2003 at a Blues Festival. Also saw Richard Thompson (great!), Sara & Teagan (cute) and glimpses of John Hiatt (sounded ok) and The Blind Boys of Alabama (at the same time Richard Thompson was playing! Tough call! They sounded great).

Imagine...the buzz is hitting you just right and then a 20 minute version of Maggot Brain starts the concert. Was it Michael Hampton on guitar? This was at the height of my depression, so this was incredible because the concert took me away from it for awhile. I remember when George Clinton came out after Maggot Brain and some more incredible jamming, and the control he had over the crowd was awe inspiring. He was a master showman...a master ringleader...he was the leader and we were following.

I remember pulling out the 1/2 joint I had left and finishing it off...I was not alone...fuck! The band were smokin' up on stage themselves! George's granddaughter sang a pro-pot rap that was surprisingly really good. Great show, great time. Even the Guru was surprised at how good the show was. She's not quite a funkhead yet, but I'm working on it!
***

Once I heard Funkadelic I was hooked. They are easily one of my top 10 bands...maybe even top 5! Eddie Hazel is one of my fav guitar players. I can't believe I don't have his "Games, Dames and Guitar Thangs" solo album yet!

I also picked up Bootsy's "Blasters of the Universe" 2 cassettes for 0.25 cents!! I listen to it in the car and it's great. So, I'm spreading out my funky wings and ready to dance into the morning light.....................
***

Discography:
Funkadelic (1970) **** Extremely psychedelic...acid funk...only recently got a hold of this one. Thanks Randy! Love it.

Free Your Ass and Your Mind will Follow (1970) ****1/2 Indulgent? An acid trip? Yeh? So what...it's classic Funkadelic. [Note: I'm now listening to this as I'm typing this the next day, and I am so loving it I'm upping my grade by 1/2*! "Funky Dollar Bill" is my all-time fav song.]

Maggot Brain (1971) ***************** This is one of my all-time favorite albums. PERIOD...Absolutely riveting. I even love "Wars of Armageddon" which is incredibly

OUT

...............................THERE

America Eats Its Young (1972) ***1/2 Sounds like some bad trips were starting to happen..still powerful in (many) spots and the intro of Bootsy to the mix. And Bernie becoming more prominent.

Cosmic Slop (1973) ****1/2 I think this is underrated. It's a classic. The title track is one of the best Funkadelic songs.

Standing on the Verge of Getting It On (1974) ***1/2 Only recently got it, so maybe underrating it.

Let's Take it To the Stage (1975) **** Same with this, though I like this a bit better...so far.

Hardcore Jollies (1976) **** This is some solid rockin' funk. Not much variation to the sound of the cd, but that's also a strength...it don't fuckin' let up.

Tales of Kidd Funkadelic (1976) *** Somewhat erratic...still glad I got it though.

One Nation Under a Groove (1978) ***** The last classic Funkadelic. Where "Hardcore Jollies" had a sameness of sound, this one's all over the place. And it's awesome. "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!" is one of my all time favs. It rocks, it makes you want to dance like

an idiot
thinking they can dance
and you want to play air guitar....awesome!

Uncle Jam Wants You (1979) *** I find this disappointing. It's more dancefloor oriented, so it's just not to my taste.

The Electric Spanking of War Babies (1981) ***1/2 The end of the line. It's good though, and better than a lot of reviews I've read. I think it's a bit more funk oriented than dance oriented...wait a minute...

LIKE I FUCKING KNOW A GOD-DAMNED THING ABOUT DANCE MUSIC!!!

So...if you hear me say "dance-oriented" ever again...send me to hell...
***

Miscellaneous (comps, archival releases, etc.):
Music for Your Mother (1993) ***** The first Funkadelic Harvey Dog laid his greedy paws upon. See story below. What can I say? I absolutely LOVE this fucking cd.

Live: Meadowbrook Rochester 1971 (1996) ***** i can testify i can testify and the guitars wail and the singing becomes gospel and the acid heads are alive and well and kicking up a storm and i love this cd and i love Eddie Hazel's guitar playing and i always get freaked during this cd and i ramble on and forget to capitalize...i am freaking out listening to this RIGHT NOW as i am typing this...

I've never told anybody this...There have been a few times when I've ordered music that I've been sick the day they've arrived. Which means I get them earlier and can start listening immediately!!! And I'm hardly sick. 5 days a year tops!

The first time was in high school (25 lifetimes ago!) and I first ordered music from Columbia House (8-Tracks!!!!!). I left school after 1 hour because I was sick (maybe?!) and my Mom picked me up and on the way home she told me the 8 tracks had arrived! I somehow knew it.

My first online order was placed with "Music Boulevard" (anyone remember them - I loved their web site), and it was delivered while I was home sick from work. It included "Music for Your Mother", Mott the Hoople's 1st...and can't remember the others.

I'm pretty sure there was one more time with BMG...but I only got the card and had to go pick it up at the post office. That's why it wasn't quite so memorable.

Well...that was kinda boring.

Funkadelic are the best and I highly recommend you get funkensteined
and funkedelicized
and funky down to your toenails

Eating Silver Apples, spending frenzy!! and a Hated Uncles article 1988

My new cd player! On top of my old receiver!
WARNING: The following blog includes a part of my past life...yeh, I know....one of those blogs
***

I am currently taking another bite out of these Silver Apples and I must say they taste as amazing as before. No!!!

Hahahaha!! This is a segue....

The Silver Apples sound MUCH better than before because, after a full year without, I finally broke down and paid $30 for a cheap cd/dvd player
BUT
it enables me to hear the music through proper speakers!
I have been listening to my cds through my computer on those shitty little speakers they throw in for you when buying a new computer.

Oh Lord...I'm hearing in the background the Silver Apples saying "come to us, come to us..." and it's sort of freaking me out.

I love this $30 cd player.

***

I am currently working on a Funkadelic blog, similar to my previous Captain Beefheart one. They're fun to do, so I'm looking forward to tomorrow...hehehehe
***

Here's an old Hated Uncles article. This is from the "Hamilton Journal" Jan. 27, 1988. A journal delivered for free to every home...including my parents. My comments in a different colour than black!

The infamous front cover. Courtesy of my new scanner!!
Thrashing out the 60s, From The Armpit Of Canada

Well before the dawn of the '80s, the music industry experienced a revival of '50s rock 'n' roll. If the reactions of university students are any indication of present trends, the '90s will bring a full blown 60s rock revival.

WTF?

At Bannisters on King Street East recently, an album release bash sponsored by CFMU-FM was held for 12 local bands. Organized by political science student, Andy Pappas, these bands, whose members consist primarily of university students, have collectively created "Music From The Armpit Of Canada." Songs were recorded independently and the album was mastered at Omega Studios in London, onto.

Our big hit single (#5 on the university charts!) hahaha..."Name on a Gravestone". We did it at some guys studio at his home in Burlington, Ontario. We did 2 other songs "At Peace" and "Anger". I wish I had a copy, but I lent it to an ex-girlfriend and it's been gone ever since. Ahhhhhhhh...

The question that begs to be answered is: Is this really indicative of the present music scene in Hamilton?

From the thrashing beat of Problem Children and Hated Uncles, to more of the same, plus some vulgarity thrown in for effect in songs like A.K.S's I Hate Your Kind, one wonders what this generation of musicians is really about. Twelve full bands, however, leads one to believe that this combination of '60s and punk rock is much more than just a fringe element.

I loved Problem Children. Good guys too. Hey...we used vulgarity too! Don't forget to mention us!
TOO LOUD

Mr. Pappas says most of these groups "couldn't afford to go vinyl alone" and adds that this album,. which will be sent to magazines and radio stations, will allow these groups to get heard. But should they? Someone should tell them that being heard does not involve cranking up far beyond normal hearing capacity.

Hahaha. This is hilarious. But should they? And like the groups had any say in the volume.

At the Bannisters bash Dec. 18, five of the 12 contributing bands showcased their respective styles. And it was like a noisy walk through the corridors of the '60s.

The Hated Uncles' lead vocalist, while reminiscent of Eric Burton (sic) with his talk-sing style, lost all possible effectiveness as he had to yell over the instruments to be heard.

Eric Burton? hahahaha brilliant

And how he guzzled beer and smoked through five numbers was a feat in itself. (Thank you) However, he did wobble during the third song, staggered and eventually, sat on the stage during the fourth and finally resorted to crawling and lying down during the fifth.

I cannot deny it. She's right.

This rather dramatic performance was followed by Social Suicide, a band with plenty of energy, but unfortunately, little talent. The most interesting note was a cigarette stuck between the strings of a guitar - for easy access no doubt - but the frantic strumming could conceivably lead some to believe that the fiery performance had set the instrument ablaze.

Don't Care

Talking with John Kinsella, bass player with the Hated Uncles, it became crystal clear that this group (and likely the others) don't really care what anyone thinks of their music.

Oh no. They're talking to JK....

"We don't play for anybody," Mr. kinsella says. "We play for ourselves."

The guitarist, who is also an artist, went on to explain that lead singer, John Harvey, studies English at McMaster. According to Mr. Kinsella, he is not a singer, but a poet and a soon-to-be-published one at that.

Thanks JK!!!

Apparently, the group usually combines music, poetry and art, by having Paul Ropel, a McMaster graduate of fine arts, create an abstract while going with the mood of the music. On this occasion, Bannisters refused to let the Hated Uncles indulge in their art to the fullest, because last time, the artist went bananas with the paint.

It's all true!!!!

Considering the thrashing hard rock the band plays, one can just imagine the artist worked into a virtual frenzy, flinging his brush this way and that.

This writer is a genius. I'm picturing this in my head.

Music From The Armpit and its 12-band offering is well named (no threatening phone calls please). The truth is, although these groups show some possiblilities in the area of instrumental talent, vocal talents are difficult to define, even more difficult to hear and in most cases, pretty .

The press is against me! The pencil-pushers better get out of my way!!!

If you enjoy head banging music then Music From The Armpit is definitely for you. If not, then you'd better grab the Tylenol before sliding this one onto the turntable.

Music From The Armpit of Canada is available at Mole Records, 278 King St. W. Hamilton.

What can I say? Hilarious.

Country Joe and the Fish inspire oceans of electrical sound and Bob Dylan was a punk!

You are all under my control. I am a wizard. I AM A WIZARD! I stopped the war in Vietnam baby!
Country Joe and the Fish: I Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die (1967) ***** I first saw Country Joe and his Fish Heads in the Monterey movie. They were incredibly psychedelic...or should I say "hi hi hi hi!!!!" They were fuckin' awesome. A complete trip. Watch it on a psychedelic drug and you're right there with them...watch it on pot and you're groovin'....watch it straight and marvel at how high Country Joe is. The important thing is to let the music TAKE you AWAY...

Side 1: The album starts off with the infamous "Fish Cheer" and it still sounds great. And with the current state of American politics today, sadly still very relevant.

[Aside: How the hell is George Bush still at 42% approval rating? How the hell did he get voted back in????? Don't the Americans realize how E V I L he and his administration are!!!???? The media has a shit load to do with it. But, please....look deep into his eyes and try to find some humanity. I'll bet you can't. I'm serious. Next time he's on tv, stare into his eyes. Very scary.

And his VP shoots people!!! Hey, if the media can manipulate the news, can't I?]

Side 1 (continued): "Who Am I?" is next and it's a very pretty song. "Pat's Song" is a little dated, but I find it charming, and it rocks out the last half. In fact, I'm starting to freak out...oh, it's back to the psychedelic ballad style. I take it back..."Pat's Song" is a great song. "Rock Coast Blues" is fine. "Magoo" hits the psychedelic trail once again, "the sky is so big, the earth is so small," and I'm sitting here on acid once again looking into the sky (your eyes) and, no. Wait..."the stars are so big, the earth is so small," and I'm sitting here on acid again....ah, the late 60s. As my friend Randy said in a comment..."Ah Acid".

Side 2: "Janis" ("electrical sound"...gotta love psychedelic lyrics) is Joe's song for one-time girlfriend Janis Joplin. "Thought Dream" has Joe pleading for them not to drop that h bomb on him. I think he means hydrogen bomb, but could it be "heroin" bomb? The Guru and I were debating what drugs Joe was on at Monterey and she thought it could be heroin...I think it's more acid with a bunch of other shit mixed in (alcohol, weed); but it wouldn't shock me if the Guru was correct. Not that it matters...Joe's still alive and doing well and this song is very enjoyable. "Thursday" is weird and seems to float in space somewhere. "Eastern Jam" is what it says it is (of course...Eastern music done by west coast white boy hippies) and "Colors for Susan" ends off the album gently and peacefully.

This album is definitely of its time. However....it's scary how relevant some of the politics are today. Where the fuck have the hippies gone??? We need them now! Countries are burning and the media feeds the lies of the political figureheads. I refuse to call them leaders because they are NOT leaders...they are selfish bastards...I'm talking about political figureheads the world round. People are fucking getting killed over fucking CARTOONS!!! This has nothing to do with religion. This has everything to do with politics and propaganda. We live in a frightening time, yet, we remain largely....silent. There's a modern day Vietnam happening right now in Iraq and the whole mideast seems close to exploding. The weather's gotten totally fucked...I'm sure it has nothing to do with us destroying the environment. Yet we remain largely passive.

STOP! Enough negativity. Let's do a cheer for the brave people who actually have humanity in their souls and are doing all they can to spread it around.

Gimmie an F! Gimmie a U! Gimmie a C! Gimmie a K! Gimmie an I! Gimmie an N! Gimmie an A!

What's that spell?
What's that spell?

FUCKIN A!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One more time!!!!!!!

FUCKIN A!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You see? Listening to this album can still get you stirred up. I love it! I picked up the original lp at my fav record store. This is currently my only Joe album, but that will change.

Country Joe's fantastic web site with tons of his songs on there for your listening pleasure and lots of educational reading material, lyrics etc. Read his thoughts on the war in Iraq.
***
What the fuck you talkin' bout Willis?
Time to have some fun.

I think Bob Dylan is hilarious. Guru T-Lu has always disagreed with this assessment, and doesn't seem to get it. It must be a fucked-up guy thing.
I purchased "Uncut presents NME Originals: Bob Dylan and the Folk Rock Boom 1964-1974" and I'm only up to 65, but Dylan has had me laughing out loud many times already. As has Donovan, and the writers! Oh God, the writers! Hilarious. Here's some samples:

"What kind of people do you take an instant dislike to?"
BD: "People that shake. An instant dislike - wham! Most of the time I throw them against a wall. I have a bodyguard. Toppo! Is Toppo in there? I have a bodyguard to get rid of people like that. he comes and wipes them out. We wiped out three people last week."

"Do you paint?"
BD: "Yeh, sure."
"What sort of painting?"
BD: "I painted my house."

I love how the journalists back then excused Dylan's rude behavior (somewhat justified at times) as the fact that he was a "poet". Well. I've published a few poems, read and attended many poetry readings, hung out with way too many poets, and from what I've discerned...Most poets wouldn't brush off a journalist. Most poets can't shut the fuck up when talking about their poetry, yet when BD does the brush off and is rude, it's because he's a "poet".

Let's face it: Dylan was a P U N K! Especially in 65-66. His live music with The Hawks was pure "punk". Maybe that's why I don't remember the punks attacking Dylan like they did so many others (especially Yes, Pink Floyd, Beatles and so on).

He was also a poet.

Today is officially Captain Beefheart day and Don Van Vliet is a genius

No!!! I swear it's raining!!! Rain drops on the evening stage.
Back to the basics, Baby!!!!

While Harvey Dog has been reveling in music fresh to his ears, we must not forget to pay tribute to 3 of the greatest of all-time.

Captain Beefheart....George Clinton....Kevin Coyne. Today I'll write about the Captain with a discography, shorthand rating, my (quick) opinion and some links to further explore the Captain for those still unfamiliar with this genius.
***
CAPTAIN BEEFHEART
***
Introduction: The Captain was a childhood friend of another fav, Frank Zappa, in Cali Cali California...drank a lot of Pepsi...listened to classic blues masters...considered a prodigy as a kid by sculptor Augustinio Rodriguez...listen to "Lost in a Whirlpool" from the late 50s and you can see he was already setting up his template...fucking amazing....played the blues in the mid-60s...started his musical path...quit the music biz in 1982...painted full-time...more respected...fuck the music biz! A TRUE fucking musical genius! And artist!!

I am listening to "Lick My Decals Off, Baby" right now and it is a crime against humanity that this title is not currently in print. Oh...people download illegally???? Imagine that!!!

Bah!!! Anyway, the Captain has left us a musical legacy to enjoy...dissect...live with...fondle...breathe...explore the valleys and canyons of our cobweb infested mind...yours isn't? Good for you. Let's explore the Captain's music.

***
photograph copyright Anton Corbijn - from Radar Station. Beautiful pic.
Discography:
Safe as Milk (1967) *** More bluesy, somewhat more trad (for Beef). Never really got into it, but it's ok. Tentative 1st steps.

Strictly Personal (1968) ??? Just got this and it's been a long time since I've heard it. We'll see. This one divides fans.

Trout Mask Replica (1969) ***** Classic. So original that it will still be original even after it is no longer original. Got me?

Lick My Decals Off, Baby (1970) ***** Easier to digest than Trout, yet still "out there". If you know what I mean. And I know I don't. And you do. And we are all dummies and I love ya!!!! Baby!!!!

The Spotlight Kid (1972) **** A dark heavy blues album. Even the Guru loves "I'm Gonna Booglarize You Baby". It's also one of my favs. And Santa Claus makes an appearance!

Clear Spot (1972) **** A great combo of complexities and straightforward songs that find the Captain nearing the end of his first brilliant era.

Unconditionally Guaranteed (1974) ***1/2 Yes. It's more mainstream. Yes. You could even say he "sold out". Yet...I like it. Maybe cause it was the first Captain I ever got. On 8 track!!! In the USA!!! I was around 14 so it was a nice intro to the Captain's world.

Bluejeans and Moonbeams (1974) ** OK. I admit it. This is the weakest Beefer I've heard. A couple of ok songs, but...blech.

Shiny Beast: Bat Chain Puller (1978) **** A great comeback and the beginning of the second, and unfortunately, last brilliant era of the Cap.

Doc at the Radar Station (1980) ***** An absolute masterpiece. His 3rd best ever after Trout and Lick.

Ice Cream for Crow (1982)
***1/2 The last one and a nice way to end his music career. His voice sounds a bit shot (those nasty cigs), but the music is awesome and his lyrics always intrigue me.
***

Miscellaneous (comps, archival releases, etc.)
Mirror Man (circa 1967) **1/2 Never got into this one. Interesting and worthwhile, but don't listen to it much.

Grow Fins 1965-1982 (1999) ***** I willingly paid $140 Cdn for this and would do so again. A real treat for fans. Unreleased Beefheart??? Where do I sign up!!!

Dust Blows Forward 1966-1982 (1999) **** An excellent comp. Glad to finally have "Hard Workin' Man" from the movie "Blue Collar". Thought it was a good movie too.

I'm Going To Do What I Want To Do: Live 1978 (2000) ***** Got this from Rhino Handmade and it's a great recording of a great live performer during a great creative period. What's not to love?

Railroadism 1966-1981 (2003)
***** I reviewed this previously. Suffice it to say...more unreleased ('til now) live Beefer. Gotta love it!
***
I'm gonna getcha. I'm gonna getcha....hahaha...gotcha!!!
Web Sites and a book!
Captain Beefheart Radar Station - Awesome! The Best! So good it's right next door in my permanent links.

Home Page Replica - Not as active anymore, but still tons of info on the great man.

Electricity - Not updated much, but again...tons of info on the Beef man.

United Mutations - a Zappa site with its own very nice Beefheart page.

Mike Barnes: "The Biography" (2002) - The Captain deserves a much BIGGER and DEEPER book than this, however...I found this to be an excellent read and I'm just thankful that someone spent the time and energy into writing a biography of Mr. Van Vliet. The link is to Amazon, and they have some reviews and samples of the book, and the price is a lot cheaper than what I paid for it. Full price hardcover for $44.95 cdn. It was worth it to me.

Go and listen to Captain Beefheart. Now!!! Go!!! It will make you a much better human being. Thank you for your time.

Harvey's Dog is playing with her bone, Red Krayola and Silver Apples make beautiful colours and Harvey Dog responds to comments

I did not know that my Grade 12 Physics teacher was in The Red Krayola. Cool.
Harvey Dog is playing with his dog...

ah!!!!!!!!!!

You thought I was playing with something else? Sick minds. The Bah is chewing these rancid (not the band!) old bones so I thought "what better time is there than now, to do some blogging?"

I am listening to Red Krayola's "God Bless the Red Krayola and All Who Sail It" and when I went to AMG to get some quick info on it, I was shocked to see it was released in 1968!!!???

1968!

WTF! This could be released 10 years into the future and still sound fresh and vibrant and...probably still sound ahead of its time. Is it just me? Am I nuts? This was the first time I've listened to these guys and I thought (the cd is now over)...I don't know what I thought, but it sure as fuck was NOT 1968!

Amazing. Here's an unofficial

I am now freaking out....

How much more incredible music is out there?! I love this. These guys (a duo) were even more ahead of their time than The Red Krayola!

I am listening to
The Silver Apples

My mind
racing
pounding

marching
left-right
left-right

one step
two steps
three steps

I hear the drumming
pounding, growing
intensifying

The Dancing Gods
dance to the drum

come to us come to us
you can hear them calling

and I can't believe
that this was
recorded in

19 60 fucking eight!

Response to Comments: Thanks for even more comments. I think I'll respond to comments (if there are any) at the end of my blogs instead of within the comments in the post. I'm getting old, so sometimes I can't remember what post the comment was under.

Vaspers: So sorry about the job. That sucks! A better job should be right around the corner. I can tell you're listening to the right music for this situation. Rocket From the Crypt are great! They rock! I need some myself. I love Moby Grape. Do you have Skip Spence's "Oar"? Classic. The Germs were the best band in "Decline of Western Civilization" (1981). Darby Crash was hilarious, but it's sad his lifestyle led to such a young death. And I am very ashamed of just getting into Tangerine Dream. I have heard their music before (from Mole's CFMU radio show...I also remember hearing Can on it as well...great show!), but there really is no excuse. Good luck!

AR: Simply Saucer has served many purposes...all of them very enjoyable. But when it's going for $100 (is that right Mole?) on ebay, purposes can quickly change! Hope you and everybody are doing well.

Mole: That's a shame. So why not start your own blog? It's free, it's easy, and you can talk about whatever you want! Go for it!

To the gentleman whose 2 posts I can't locate (exactly why I'm doing it this way)...thanks!

I am now getting funky with Betty Davis. Music is the best....that went by way too fast. Betty Davis was married to Miles and I believe was a girlfriend of Jimi Hendrix. This sounded great. I needed more funk in the collection.

Tangerine Dream is up next...starting from the beginning: "Electronic Meditation". Thanks to Randy this is a night of first listens. I am freaking out too much...I must rest.

All this new music drives a dog to distraction, Ash Ra Tempel ARE The Cosmic Jokers and we are all Mountain Goats!

I've listened to a couple of Ash Ra Tempel already ["Join Inn" (1973) and "Starring Rosi" (1973)] and Ash Ra have become one of my all-time favs.

[Serious Note: Well, not that serious. But to continue. Sometimes I wonder why I like music so much. Sort of from a scientific viewpoint. And when the music takes me away (like Ash Ra and so many others), it lifts me up...elates me. I can understand why rock'n'roll, or any music for that matter, is often compared to fucking. It's not quite there...but other than the Guru and the family it's #2 in my life. There is something pure and magical about music, regardless of the asshole that may have created it.]

Anyway...Ash Ra Tempel are awesome and I love them very much.

"I love you Ash Ra Tempel" - said in the tone of "Grizzly Man"

I'm not insane...just Ash Ra damaged.

The Band's 1st disc of "A Musical History" was fantastic. The Band's Web Site. Excellent site!

It gave me a new appreciation of them. I know the Guru is a bigger fan than I am. I mean, I love them and all that and when they back Dylan, well God almighty they're fucking fantastic, but sometimes the studio albums, I dunno...I mean I've pretty much always had them and loved them, but I dunno...so I'll keep on running with this sentence and see where it ends up....

It ended up here. I've heard some of Gary Higgins' "Red Hash" (1973) and it sounds incredible to these ears.

Coincdence: I had read the revew of this cd in "Record Collector" and it sounded like it was right up my alley. So I placed it on my "To Be Ordered" list for next time I...um, placed an order. Then Randy sends me an email telling me of some of the treats coming my way, and lo and behold (Band connection there), this cd was on it.

I know if I had ordered this I would have been very happy.
In fact, I will order it. He deserves the royalties. A fantastic online interview with Gary Higgins.

I'm listening to The Mountain Goats right now, and it sounds good. I'll have to focus on the lyrics more next time.

Ever heard of Hamell on Trial? I have one of his cds and The Mountain Goats seem like a less acerbic, more gentle version...I love Hamell's lyrics.

We'll see. They do sort of capture me every so often.
