the eye closes and magma citizen cain seeps through eyelids

Magma: Magma (1970)
As a kid I would read the Illustrated Encyclopedia of Rock in 1976 and sense that virgin eyes and mind were ready (and FUCKING dying!) to be soiled by decadance and...you know, the other side! I devoured every word..every pixel of the pictures...

Many things stood out to these once-innocent eyeballs.
Iggy in primordial stooges glitter pose.
Arthur Brown hanging on a cross with his crown of fire.
The covers of Hawkwind's "Space Ritual" and "Blind Faith" (whose cover confused the shit outta me).
Frank Zappa and the Mothers looking freaky.

So many more sights and words entrenched inside what's left of my marijuana memory...

Including a band that invented their own language!!! This band was Magma and I always found it amazing that someone would invent their own language for their musical journey. This memory stayed with me for years, but it was only recently that I actually got my hands on Magma's debut.

After all these years and finally listening to the debut, how does it stand up?? Well...I fucking adore it!!! The sound is what jazz-rock should sound like. The language doesn't even sound like an invented language!! Is this due to my indulgences over the years and the result of 6 concussions??? I don't think so, dude! The vocal flows with the music to set up the story...basically earth is collapsing, earth come across the kobaians who are much more advanced, and are convinced by the earthlings to come to earth and enlighten us. Of course, you know things will soon awry for the visiting kobaians...for which I need to get the 2nd Magma album...1,000 Degress Centigrades (1971).

Knowing the basic story and listening to the music makes a whole lot of fucking sense to me. 37 years later, and the earth is in far worse shape now than ever. We need the KOBAIANS!!! Of course they would get investigated as terrorists and we would then try to make capitalists out of them by getting what we can out of them...to make more money!

Anyway...Magma are fucking awesome and we all need some Magma in our collections! Here's some
Magma info from the great Perfect Sound Forever!

master cope saving us from the terorists
Julian Cope: Citizen Cain'd (2005)
heavy heavy heavy
This is incredible! I'm in the mood for some heavy rock dynamics and this is very satisfying. Listen to this with your headphones on and the volume cranked up high High HIGH!!!

the terrorists are coming
keep yourself
locked inside,
the differences
are staggering,
if you've stopped running
ya gotta hide

if you feel fear
when eyes are open
and all you hear
is that the doors are closed
and the terrorists are near
try to satisfy yourself
by screaming "I tried!!"

do you feel doubt?
do you hesitate
before you pull
the trigger?
do you think that
thinking
is a dangerous pill
best taken
under supervision?

embrace the dead
cause the puppetmaster
is ready to feed your head
the warmth of youth
is tired and cold
the tenets of truth
shaken and sold

i sit looking at the world lost and confused
can't make sense of anything
my head's at war with emotions
my emotions now empty playthings
Exactly
i wait for the puppetmaster
to come and save me
let's wait for the puppetmaster
to come and save us
I hate that motherfucker
...i wish he'd go away.

the music takes me
to another dimension
and tried to inform me of clarity
but I sit in utter stagnation
and put together pieces
of my insanity
to my own utter indignation.

A fantastic obscure album of Dylan covers from 1972.

Coulson Dean McGuinness Flint: Lo and Behold (1972) This is similar in spirit to Manfred Mann's Earth Band's many great Dylan covers...of whom Tom McGuinness came from. [aside: Is he the guitar player during Paul Jones' era, who stood with a constant nicely stoned grin? I have a couple of videos from this time period...and I think so.] "Don't You Tell Henry", "Tiny Montgomery" and "Lo and Behold" stand out for me. Great shit for Dylan fans.
***

Speaking of Manfred Mann here's a couple of youtubes for ya.

Here's the clip I was talking about - you know...stoned grinning guitarist. Paul Jones is quite the...um...performer? entertainer? Great cover from 1968. thanx shivluvzmusic.

Here are the 1976 Manfred's in full stadium rock mode, doing one of the greatest car songs ever. "Blinded by the Light". Written by Bruce Springsteen. thanx scc1962.

Reddy Kilowatt

REDDY KILOWATT

This has nothing to do with music, but it sure has "something" to do with life!

Get a load of this picture. What the hell is this!!??

The Guru came across this character from her flickr buddy Jim.

This is real!! The fucking Alabama Power Corp used Reddy Kilowatt as a corporate spokestoon!! Then they licensed Reddy to other power corporations. Over 200! And he has a brother - Reddy Flame!!!!!

Too funny! Check out toonpedia for more info.
I am on the floor rolling my fucking ass off!!!

fraction "moon blood" - classic fuzz drenched psych, and The Captain leaves us a Brown Star!!!

how does one search fraction??
Fraction: Moon Blood (1970)
How's this for obscurity...only 200 copies of this were pressed. It became ultra-rare desired by freaks with psychedelic pocketbooks, ensuring it's cd release in 1999.

The singing's over the top [aside: I saw a couple of references comparing the singing to Jim Morrison, but I don't see it. Too convenient.], the playing is solid and driving...even the slower songs are heavy. Then I saw a site that titled their review of the album as "christian hard rock psych"...huh?? Well, looking at the titles and picking out a lyric here and there, I guess that's possible. Certainly rocks harder than "Godspell"!! And harder and more psych than "Jesus Christ Superstar" [aside: which I love and think of as truly psychedelic. Who woulda thought my family would buy a psych album for my confirmation?! Hahahaha...fools!! Started me on the drug-addled life I now live!!!!]. Hmmm. I started listening to the lyrics closer, and they are Christian..i guess, but certainly not drib drab crap.

The bonus tracks have a nice garagey live feel. Too bad they didn't keep it going.
Here's a negative review of this. Someone has it on ebay with a starting bid of $299.00!!!!! That's insane! No bids yet.

Urgh...I always get somewhat fucked up and confused when dealing with Christianity in rock lyrics...being raised Catholic and totally rejecting it...
conclusion: great obscure fuzzy psych - christian lyrics or not!

will someone lend Don a fucking dime!!
Captain Beefheart: The Brown Star Sessions (1972)
After buying all of the Cap's legit shit, I've taken my obsession to the boots and live tapes. These are outtakes from "The Spotlight Kid" (1972) and "Clear Spot" (1972) sessions.

There are so many awesome beautiful killer riffs swaying to and fro on this album....is this the best boot yet? could be, rabbit, could be - even counting those "controversial" Ozit releases, which seem to divide Beefheart fans. I'm so greedy for more Beefheart that I'll take what I can get. I paid fucking $160 for Grow Fins!! That's how much of a fanatic I am!!! Or nut!!!!!!

You sense the band is so fucking tight after the dictatorial (and genius!) Trout Mask and Decals albums, that they have developed a natural looseness in their playing now...yet still be tighter than the synapse behind my brow.

hi-lites

omg - where do i start????

right from the first song -
"boogler risin'" is awesome fluidity.
"dirty blue gene" is here in 2 great versions.
"harry irene" is eerie yet calls to me from the waterfront distance.
"kiss" is odd beauty with some wild harmonica playing.
"little scratch" a loose bluesy instrumental of the song.
"your love brought me to life" is catchy as shit...all the instrumentals are!
"pompadour swamp" is better than bluejeans - just add the cap and you've got a $10 suit!
"funeral hill" is deep and dark.
"ok ok ok ok...we get it!!
Every song is incredible and engrossing and gets your brain jumping"
"Yeh...you got it babe!"

Here's some info and more on The Brown Star Sessions (1972). Dammit! The Magic Band deserves more recognition!!!

Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame

Hahahaha...did you know the Captain became eligible in 1991 and still isn't in.
Can - eligible 1993 - still not in.
We know they're biased against Canadians since The Guess Who aren't in.

You know - I like R.E.M - but I mean...really??? Before the Beefer!!??
An over-rated Van Halen gets in ahead of Tim Buckley. Yeh, yeh, Eddie's a great guitar player, but doncha need songs? Grand Funk deserves to get in before Van Halen.

Another Question?? What exactly constitutes "rock" these days?

Witthuser & Westrupp - German progressive psychedelic folk trippiness goodness!!!

uh..guys you have to be inside the car to actually drive it!!
Witthuser & Westrupp: Trips und Traume (1971)
This is beautiful beautiful music.
Did I say it was beautiful?

calming the savage in my head
kissing the ravage of
the premature dead
cosmic folk for the weary
set the controls for the heart of your mind
and reside away from the madness
of everyday life
and everyday people
into a life
of pastoral psychedelic peace.

peace.

It's amazing how much hi-quality experimental psychedelic beautiful progressive fucking insane shit came out of Germany in the early 70s. A true source for some incredible music. This album is definitely worth checking out! It struck me while listening to it how much I was enjoying it. It snuck up on me and took me into another dimension.

"if you take lsd in your tea" - "you will feel it in your knees"
It's always fun when Germans break into English! It sounded like at the end, he preferred the joint instead of the lsd..or was that on TOP of the lsd?

Here are youtube sightings of Witthuser & Westrupp. Praise youtube!! I was NOT expecting videos of these guys. Here's an example of the beauty of these guys. From 1969. thanks morrritz.

Here they are in the forest playing for nature.

A nice little folk tune about Dracula. 1970. thanks guanire for the last 2.

The Saints, Beefheart runs by and AEC rock!

The Saints love neon jesus
The Saints: Eternally Yours (1978) *****
I remember telling Randy in an email how much I enjoyed The Saints "I'm Stranded". He replied - yeh, but wait until you hear "Eternally Yours".

I am listening to Eternally Yours right now and it is helping to rock away the New Job Depression Blues. The "Product" songs both blast away.

This type of music helped me immensely during my youth (which lasted until my fucking 30s!! - hahaha)...there was nothing else for you when you felt like shit. Put on some blasting rock'n'roll.
high energy
sweat
an exorcism of negativity
and all the shit
they shoot your way

I liked it hard, fast...but...structured. Exactly like this!! [aside: I'm probably more into the "fucked up" stuff these days, but we all need an exorcism now and again!!] Which puzzles me to no end. I mean...I had heard of these guys but never "heard" them...really...how fucking pathetic is that????

I have now rectified this gap in my life. The Saints are now in regular rotation. They'll hit my "listening list" consistently now!

"Run Down" just caught my attention. Every song just rocks along...perfectly. Give this album 5 fucking stars!!!

The Saints home page.

I think it's good karma to mention Captain Beefheart in the blog once in awhile. The Beefer tells us what it's all about!
***

Wow...I'm making a copy of Iggy Pop's "Live in San Francisco 1981" and my dvd player is making some unearthly noises!! I think I'm freaking out!!!
***

Here's an awesome Art Ensemble of Chicago performance.
When I lived in Oakville, there was a really cool jazz cd store called Gregorian (i think) and I picked up Art Ensemble of Chicago's "The Pathe Sessions" from the "Americans Swinging in Paris" series. They also looked amazingly cool on the cover! When I heard Fontella Bass belting out cosmic sexual lyrics on "Theme de Yoyo" over a driving bass line...well, I was hooked!
Then "People in Sorrow" came on and I was swept away with it's beauty. awesome awesome music. credit: sky50

I'm listening to Magazine's "Real Life" (1978) and it's sounding mighty fine!

The Band

I'm so fucking pretty...and smart!
The Guru and I were just having a musical disagreement.

I claim that The Band are great, but over-rated.
The Guru thinks they are one of the greatest bands ever.

My arguments:

1) Robbie Robertson sort of irritates me. I mean..have you seen this guy in interviews? Cock in hand or what!? [The Guru had to agree on this one. Well...I didn't say cock-in-hand during the conversation.]

2) They should have rocked more. [The Guru could understand this, but didn't necessarily agree.]

3) Leonard Cohen was a better lyricist than Robbie Robertson. [The Guru said that was a stupid statement.]

The Guru then made the cogent statement that The Band was also special because they stayed true to their roots (Americana) when everyone else wasn't...and they didn't cross over.

EXACTLY!!!!

This nails it. You see. I like the other side better. The crazy wild experimental shit!
***

But don't get me wrong!! I think The Band are great and I've always enjoyed them. They just ain't no Stooges or Can. [aside: when I mentioned Can during the conversation, the Guru complained her stomach was upset.]

Lots of fun!!!

The sexy Mo
Maureen Tucker: Life in Exile After Abdication (1989) *****
This album blew me away!!! I figured it would be good, and I was looking forward to listening...BUT...this exceeded my expectations by a mile.
This sounds more VU experimental
than you would imagine.
I love the songs about the reality of work.

Listen to this if you can find it.

What??? Here's
a link that may help you.....what do I mean? Oh, click on the blog title and it takes you to rapidshare. What could that possibly be? You may want to check it out.

[aside: did you know that the drummer for one of the MOST legendary groups EVER actually worked at fucking Wal-Mart. Hey, she had to make a living as a single mother in her mid-forties.
Note: These were the days before file sharing.
Note: I just went to amazon and this is her only album available...from $41.00 Cdn (not including shipping from the US - another $15-20)]

Great song after great song....Mo is a goddess and still beats the drums like a motherfucker!!!

For the fuck of it

Here's some albums I've listened to lately with a 5 star rating based on how much I enjoyed it at the time. In other words - ratings are useless, transitory!...but fun.

Humble Pie: Rock On (1971) **** good shit.
Shawn Phillips: Collaboration (1971) ****1/2 i dig this guy...something about his voice...reminds me of Ted Neeley from Jesus Christ Superstar...outrageously talented.
Plastic People of the Universe: Egon Bondy's...(1973-1974) ***** classic
Nick Cave: Abattoir Blues / Lyre of Orpheus (2004) ***** his best...at this moment!
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (2006) ***1/2 very good...surprisingly acoustic and melodic
Van Morrison: Days Like This (1995) *** typical Van
Comus: First Utterance (1971) ***** wow!
***

Saw "The Life and Times of Steve Marriott" (2000) [aside: thanks Steve!] and loved it. Not a "dirt" doc, since his substance abuse problems (and weird death) were very much glossed over. That's cool, because they included lots of live clips...and that's what lasts.

Here's a clip of classic Humble Pie (with Peter Frampton!!!) doing an acoustic cover of The Yardbirds "For Your Love". Great stuff! kudos to brainfish...

Thank you for reading...I'm outta here. Code Factory tomorrow!
