Magma: Magma (1970)
As a kid I would read the Illustrated Encyclopedia of Rock in 1976 and sense that virgin eyes and mind were ready (and FUCKING dying!) to be soiled by decadance and...you know, the other side! I devoured every word..every pixel of the pictures...
Many things stood out to these once-innocent eyeballs.
Iggy in primordial stooges glitter pose.
Arthur Brown hanging on a cross with his crown of fire.
The covers of Hawkwind's "Space Ritual" and "Blind Faith" (whose cover confused the shit outta me).
Frank Zappa and the Mothers looking freaky.
So many more sights and words entrenched inside what's left of my marijuana memory...

Including a band that invented their own language!!! This band was Magma and I always found it amazing that someone would invent their own language for their musical journey. This memory stayed with me for years, but it was only recently that I actually got my hands on Magma's debut.
After all these years and finally listening to the debut, how does it stand up?? Well...I fucking adore it!!! The sound is what jazz-rock should sound like. The language doesn't even sound like an invented language!! Is this due to my indulgences over the years and the result of 6 concussions??? I don't think so, dude! The vocal flows with the music to set up the story...basically earth is collapsing, earth come across the kobaians who are much more advanced, and are convinced by the earthlings to come to earth and enlighten us. Of course, you know things will soon awry for the visiting kobaians...for which I need to get the 2nd Magma album...1,000 Degress Centigrades (1971).
Knowing the basic story and listening to the music makes a whole lot of fucking sense to me. 37 years later, and the earth is in far worse shape now than ever. We need the KOBAIANS!!! Of course they would get investigated as terrorists and we would then try to make capitalists out of them by getting what we can out of them...to make more money!
Anyway...Magma are fucking awesome and we all need some Magma in our collections! Here's some Magma info from the great Perfect Sound Forever!

heavy heavy heavy
This is incredible! I'm in the mood for some heavy rock dynamics and this is very satisfying. Listen to this with your headphones on and the volume cranked up high High HIGH!!!

the terrorists are coming
keep yourself
locked inside,
the differences
are staggering,
if you've stopped running
ya gotta hide
if you feel fear
when eyes are open
and all you hear
is that the doors are closed
and the terrorists are near
try to satisfy yourself
by screaming "I tried!!"
do you feel doubt?
do you hesitate
before you pull
the trigger?
do you think that
thinking
is a dangerous pill
best taken
under supervision?
embrace the dead
cause the puppetmaster
is ready to feed your head
the warmth of youth
is tired and cold
the tenets of truth
shaken and sold
i sit looking at the world lost and confused
can't make sense of anything
my head's at war with emotions
my emotions now empty playthings
i wait for the puppetmaster
to come and save me
let's wait for the puppetmaster
to come and save us
I hate that motherfucker
...i wish he'd go away.
the music takes me
to another dimension
and tried to inform me of clarity
but I sit in utter stagnation
and put together pieces
of my insanity
to my own utter indignation.
Julian Cope's Awesome Head Heritage!!
