The beautiful thing about it is: this is the first time I finished up a job and actually had choices to make. I've NEVER had a choice - ya take what you can get babybob....

Went to see War Dance last night. It's a doc on Northern Uganda kids deep in the heart of the war torn country who go to Kampala for a music festival...they do great and the kids are great and the music and dancing was fantastic, BUT - it should have been so much better. Dare I say it was boring at the beginning...and it's about war, children and music! It should not be boring. It was too manipulated by the directors to feel for the kids, which was totally unnecessary. Let the audience make up it's own mind. [aside: the host started explaining about the politics in Uganda and how bad Idi Amin was - did we really need this explained to us? I mean - get out! - Idi Amin was a bad man?!?!?! I better look him up - never heard of Idi - Amin?]
Doesn't Kin Ping Meh's "Too Many People" sound like some Lighthouse song - I think "Good Day"?? That's not a bad thing, ya know...
The Mole sent me a package of some tuneage and it's quite an exciting package! [aside: thanks bruce!] New Simply Saucer (excellent!), JD King & The Coachmen (on my mp3 player and coming up mole!), Burnt Sugar (also on my mp3 player and coming up) Battleship Ethel, Shangs and a couple of movies including the primo 26 minute doc of "The Last Pogo" (now THIS is a fucking documentary!!!!) I'll post my little commentary on JD soon!
This American election is depressing. Obama and McCain are just 2 more of the same old...The old guard is certainly secure when it comes to American politics! Obama may be black, youngish and (I guess to some) charismatic...but, he seems like just another bullshit politician to me. Still - compared to McCain, all I can say is - "Let's go Obama!!!!"
Acid Mothers Gong: Nagoya 2003 is a pretty crazy exciting live document. Check out Acid Motherhood first though! That is one mother of an album. Great cover too!
I'm giving Sparks another try right now. I've sorta liked the stuff of theirs I've heard, but it's never got it's hooks into me completely. It's just started and sounding pretty good. Hum....

Is The 8 dvd Beat Club series available?? That would be sweet!!! A box set? Hum...which one? A computer book? Nah...I've got a couple I'm still working through. * sigh * so many choices...
Sparks are sounding good...I can see why they didn't get their hooks in me. Too kitschy for a cynical son-of-a-bitch like me. I'm more in the mood for kitsch today, so it's sounding quite good.

I watched this as it happened back in the day...but it's been 12 years, so time to visit this considered classic between 2 of the best...

Guru gone for a month, my mind is full and the tunes are still rockin'!!
I just got back from dropping the Guru off at the airport. She's off to Vancouver for a conference, then off to Ontario to see family and friends. The Bah and I are going to miss her, but hopefully the time will pass quickly.

4 weeks to go on my Life Skills contract and the mind is full thinking of my next assault to grab some of the money tree.
There's a library job that would be cool...even though it's only til April. There seem to be some interest in doing some Life Skills stuff, but it's all part-time.
OR
I may pursue my own business - web design, tutoring and whatever else...gotta work on the business plan. There's a program out there for us (soon-to-be) unemployed folk that assists in getting our own business started. At least this gets me back into the computer field - since that's what I went back to fucking school for!!

The Mystic Tide: Solid Sound (1994) Who the fuck were these guys?!?! Wow!!!!! I was absolutely blown away by them. Some kind of combination of Les Rallizes Denudes and The Velvets with some garage punk thrown in. Awesome!!! Here's Julian Cope's assessment. So - some of these recordings were done in the 90s?...so fucking what!!! Great music is great music.
I found some Kinks bootlegs from Japan on Telhados do Mundo that I'm drooling over.
Man, one of the reasons I actually wouldn't mind going to Ontario for is to see some live music. We're pretty isolated here. Just thinkin' bout that summer watching George Clinton, Van Morrison and Neil Young would make any music lover salivate.

Steve Hillage: Fish Rising (1975) This was a very pleasant surprise (well - it really shouldn't be a surprise), and sounded like classic Gong with Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth's space whispers intact.

Back from Moresby Adventure Camp
...with a bunch of mentally ill and brain-injured people. Oh yeh - there were clients there as well!
It was quite the adventure. Here's a few fun things that happened.
a) First off the food that we were supposed to bring was a little anal health wise. I mean, the clients couldn't afford this health food even if they liked it. One client called drunk and left a message on the answering machine at work: "It has come to my attention that there are no hot dogs being brought. I think it would be egregious not to bring hot dogs to the camp." Classic! Especially using the word egregious! So - we did end up bringing some hot dogs, marshmallows & chocolate chips for smores and some potato chips. Wise move!
b) I couldn't talk the boss into letting us bring pop - cause there was a diabetic going. So guess who was the only person who snuck pop into the camp? That's right. The diabetic!
c) Real personality problems between 2 of the clients. They both know everything about everything - of course, one has a sense of humour about it and the other is deadly serious. I saw them cursing each other a few times.
d) One of the clients wanted to go home on day 3. This after another client picked up his bag (probably 20 pounds - at least) and started walking home. We were in the middle of nowhere. I got in the jeep and looked around for him. No luck. Getting back to camp the other guy wanted to go home, so I said I'd drive him to the ferry and we'd search for the other guy on our way. 6 1/2 km outside camp we came upon our missing camper. He hopped in the jeep and we drove to the ferry. 6 1/2 km man came back with me and the other guy went home. Not bad. We only lost 1 guy...and for 4 nights that's pretty good.
e) There was a bear hanging around our campsite. Coming back from a hike, a client and myself came upon the bear exploring the front of the cabin. I said let's make noise and head to the longhouse. The bear stared at us, but wandered off.
f) 2 of the clients were eating hot dogs over the fire - I thought I'd grab one myself, but noticed the dogs looked somewhat green. They didn't seem to mind this. I passed on the hot dog.
g) We ate well, since one of the clients was a great cook and loved to share his expertise.
h) On the day before we were to go home, 6 1/2 km man decided he wanted to go swimming. I thought the water would be a little cold, but said I'd go down with him and keep an eye on him. I was shooting the shit when all of a sudden he jumped in! I thought "fuck you dude, I'm going in too." So, I went back to the longhouse and put on my shorts and went back down. I hesitated then yelled "MOTHERFUCKER!!!!" and ran off the dock into the incredibly cold water. I came right out, but it was invigorating and we ended up getting most of the campers to jump in as well. A great bonding experience.
i) On our 2nd last day, 6 1/2 km man got angry with another counsellor and wanted to go home. I said I'd stay back and talk to him. He ended up sticking it out, so we drove to town and I grabbed a couple of pops! Ah, sweet coca-cola!!!!
Overall: It was a fun experience. I missed the lack of showers and plumbing (and pop!), but for 4 nights it was alright. Everybody seemed to have a good time, and I do get 2 days to take off down the line. Here's the Moresby Adventure Camp link.

Isaac Hayes R.I.P 1942-2008
I was sad to hear about Isaac Hayes dying. He seemed to be in such great shape. I've been a fan ever since my Dad bought me "Live at the Sahara Tahoe" in grade 7 and I played it at school and got in shit for playing the "Theme from Shaft", you know, with the swear words in it.

Hey - it was a fucking Roman Catholic school!
I realized how much I loved his voice when I was into watching every episode of the classic "South Park" and could hardly wait for Isaac as Chef singing the most explicitly sexual songs possible. He was awesome in the role and damn it - should have won an Emmy.
In the past couple of years I got back into appreciating Isaac - especially when I picked up "Hot Buttered Soul" (1969). Great great great album. Since then I've also picked up "To Be Continued" (1970), "Black Moses" (1971) and the classic soundtrack "Shaft" (1972).

The Guru is getting ready for Canadian Idol. She's a big fan, and I'm at the computer while she watches it so I get sucked in...a little. The music is irrelevant, but the drama can be intoxicating. The contestants seem much more likeable than say - American Idol. Us Canadians are so much nicer. :)

Recent things I've liked (music and otherwise), Facebook dilemma and The Missing Link in the WWF!!!
Recent likes
I was walking around Spirit Lake with The Bah and listening to the old mp3 player, and I really got into Mars Bonfire's "Faster Than the Speed of Light" (1969). I mean I like John Kay's rock'n'roll gruff of a voice, but Mars' more understated voice works pretty damn good as well! I loved the Steppenwolf songs (of course, written by Mars aka Dennis Edmonton aka Dennis McCrohan) especially "Ride With Me" which caused me to start singing at the top of my lungs...it also helps to warn the bears!!! Great fucking album that gave me great pleasure.
Another thing I liked was walking around Spirit Lake once again.
The awesome weather when we went to Prince George.
November's first 2 albums: En Ny Tid Ar Har (1970) and 2:a November (1971). This Swedish band plays awesome hard rock with a slight prog edge...and they mainly sing in their own language which I think is a plus - even though I have no clue what they're singing. If you're into dark, early 70s hard rockin psych prog...check this baby out!

Doldinger's Motherhood (1970): This was the album prior to starting Passport and I loved it! Hard rockin' jazz with some krautrock touches and you have a hell of an album! I'm also digging Passport!
Blogs that offer downloads. I'm all for supporting the artist, and I still buy all I can afford - but by downloading I discover artists and musicians I otherwise would never have heard...which means, I would never have been able to support. Artists who embrace the Internet are the ones who I feel will be supported in the long run. Believe me guys - your sales start dropping and do you think your record company will show you loyalty?

Inner Thoughts of the Dog (To Facebook or not to Facebook...that is the question)
The Guru has been getting into Facebook and is loving finding groups from her old days in Welland (ie. people who skated at the roller rink, her old grade school etc.) and making old contacts. It's a very social environment, which is what keeps me away from it.
It has made me think of the past, and the way I left Ontario for BC. Ya see, I was going through a lot of changes - quit drinking, dealing with a major MAJOR depression imbued with lots of anxiety, and I felt no support from my oldest friends. They were openly hostile towards the Guru and seemed to blame her for my going through changes. They wanted the old Harvey Dog with beer in hand. Me. I wanted to leave the old Harvey Dog behind and move on to the next stage of my life...take the Harvey Dog to new adventures.
This caused some friction near the end, and I haven't been in contact with a couple of them. One emailed me, but I didn't respond. I had too much anger? disappointment? hostility? Ya see - he thought I should start drinking again and my problems would go away - and also leave the Guru (which ain't going to happen) so this made me question his friendship. It seemed selfish.
BUT - am I being too hard? am I expecting too much? I don't really know. In situations like this each individual has their own viewpoint and think they're actions are justified. I hate conflict - confrontation, so I fade away instead of dealing with the situation. I've been dealing with the ol' depression and have started enjoying life once again since moving to Haida Gwaii. Working in Life Skills has also opened my eyes and to be more understanding of other people's shortcomings - as well as my own. We're all just trying to deal with the cards life has dealt us and doing the best we can. Now - if you're not trying, then I have no time for you. We all gotta try to become better human beinz. This, to me, is what life is all about. Doin' the best you can. It's never too late to try.
So - should I join Facebook and open myself up to social contact with people from the past OR move on and keep the blog going (good lord, they can contact me through the blog or my email - and I would actually respond these days) and focus on the future letting the past rest where it may?
I really don't know the answer...for today I'm not joining Facebook, but tomorrow????
