youtube - The Guess Who: Tin Soldier 1968 & The Turtles: Outside Chance 1965

youtube late 60s TV Pop Delights

I've always loved this song...here's the late 60s Canadian version done by The Guess Who. thanks 69Lovett

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Since we're in a "classic" pop mode, here are The Turtles doing "Outside Chance" from 1965. A very very early Warren Zevon song. Check out "Battle of the Bands" (1968) & "Turtle Soup" (1969 - and produced by Ray Davies of The Kinks!) for some tasty listening pleasure. thanks joehilllouistwo

Karuna Khyal's "Alomoni" is a CLASSIC!

listen to this!!! karuna khyal
Karuna Khyal: Alomoni (1976) this album gave me one of the most enjoyable and pleasurable listening experiences i have experienced in awhile...
i mean....
goddamn!!!

this is entrancing
hypnotic
demonic beefheartian vocals
that blows the mind apart and re-assembles the shattered pieces into a picasso jigsaw...

no info on this group?????
same people as brast burn??????

this is incredible! what a rewarding obscurity!!!

another japanese mid-70s psychedelic underground avante-garde experimental krautrocky bluesy disc that will reward innumerable listens for tired ears ready to explore something a little "out there"

go for it!!!

this and Magical Power Mako have been my 2 fav discoveries in my recent exploration of the japanese underground in the 70s...and if you have any passing interest in the phenomenon of the music listed in Julian Cope's Japrocksampler then i highly recommend you dive in head first

shake your locks off
look at the sun in a different way
and dig this:
you'll be a whole bunch better person than you were before

prog not frog discusses karuna khyal and provide a link to give a listen.

Poem written January 12th around 1:00 p.m: Vomit and Alarm Clocks

Vomit and Alarm Clocks

i stumble towards the bathroom
1 hour to work and feeling like shit....
i heave 3 times
each one stronger than the previous
THEN
i hear the alarm clock
announcing that
s l e e p
is OVER
time for work
i scream "no no no no no no!!!!!"
did i set the clock wrong?
no no no no no no

i lay back down pale and weak
unable to move a muscle
without maximum effort
the guru enters
and tells me i need to see a doc
i'm like no no no no no no
i don't wanna see no doc
they do nothing but make you feel
like a
faker baker -
"why come to me when there are REAL sick people
out there for me to see!!!!"
the doc screams into my face
as the sweat pours down
and the pains in my chest give away my age

i swear i'm gonna
start eating right
exercising and stretching
my bodily woes away
until i'm running and cycling
round the island
like a tourist....

my eyes open warily
it's now 12:30
the dog needs to go out
the cat needs to be pet
i feel unsteady, sickly
like the vomit may re-appear
and make me humble....

i struggle and get the garbage out
(large piece of wood on it
to keep the eagles and other sundry
animals from decorating our yard
with a garbage collage)

i head back in
and put these god-damn words
down onto my computer
and this
...blog....

Snow Storms, Cancon for Obama, Captain Beefheart Under Review, Recent Listens and Warren Zevon's shit is fucked up!!!!

Have a NICE DAY!!!!
It's a New Year and the snow piles up - "Most snow since I was a kid", states 40 year old lifelong resident - "We used to get more snow than this when I was a kid", states 80 year old lifelong resident - "It's like I brought the snow with me from Ontario", states 46 year old 1 1/2 year long resident -

and the talk about the
weather
continues
to fill the silent voids
of our conversations...
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

The Guru has been off throughout the xmas holidays healing her knee and enjoying life as a bum - even though I can tell she's getting restless - she's not a true bum like some of us!
###################

I've worked through the xmas season at both my jobs.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
Poor little Harvey Dog...
hey, I ain't no
Chimney Sweeper!!!!
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I saw that CBC (or CBS? who cares?) is having some kind of contest for people to submit Cancon songs to send Obama to fill up his Ipod...
at first -
What the fuck is this? [anger] This is soooooooo gay!!!! [disbelief]
second thought -
It's only a fucking song contest!!!
Take a CHILL PILL!!!!!

OK - so what Canadian songs are somewhat representative of our country?
well...
"American Woman" by The Guess Who comes to mind...
B.T.O's "Takin' Care of Bizness"?
Neil Young's "Tonight's the Night"? ha - that be funny,
but Neil's gotta be in there somewhere...
how bout, "Impeach the President"?
hahahaha
I'm killing myself here!!!!
Actually any Cancon song about drinking beer would work...
Forgotten Rebels "Surfin' on Heroin" anyone?
The Hated Uncles, "Why Do I Live in Canada"?
OK OK OK OK
When I become self-referential it's time to move on and change the topic...
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

So...HOW ARE YOU??????
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

The Guru is a bit of a Captain Beefheart fan (I know I know!!! How lucky am I?), so we settled in to watch "Captain Beefheart: Under Review". We got through about 20 minutes when the Guru couldn't take the talking heads (NOT byrne, harrison, weymouth or frantz) anymore, so I flicked it off for future reference.

She WAS right. I enjoyed hearing the old band members, but the critics are so full and sure of themselves it's pretty nauseating. The clown speaking from a pulpit in a church with stained glass windows behind him was a bit too much. Could have been hilarious, but I wasn't picking up any irony coming from the guy. There were a couple of times, where I thought, "you don't know that's what he was thinking." or "this is revisionist history" --- BUT the unseen to my eyes clips of the Captain in action is more than worth the price of admission.

Recent Listens

Parliaments: Testify - Best of the Early Years (2000) this is an excellent primer before George and the boys discovered Linear Self Development
ensconced the brain inside the maggots
ate the young
and freed the mind to save the ass!!!

Burton Cummings: Above the Ground (2008) his first solo in ages and his best since his solo debut (or at least Dream of a Child from 1978)...this could have been cut down to be a lean mean fighting 5-6 songs a side lp instead it's a 19 song cd. still...his best stuff in 2-3 decades.

Warren Zevon: Preludes - Rare and Unreleased Recordings (2007) a collection of demos and miscellany from the LA genius. i'm a fan so this is a welcome release...i especially dig the electronic sounding "werewolves of london"...

Nurse with Wound: Huffin' Rag Blues (2008) these crazy dudes
dissect the blues
throw the blues in a juicer
put in the oven for 50 years at 100 degrees
remove
let cool
insert into computer gadgetry
printout the data
in an auditory format....
voila!
the new Nurse with Wound album!
very interesting and more listens should reveal the true power of a nurse with the blues...
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like the record companies are going after youtube...sigh...they absolutely refuse to adjust to the new technology.

Believe me - I am all for enabling artists and musicians to be able to make a living at their craft, their art...this is vital for any culture!!
BUT
when the hell have most artists or musicians been able to make a living at their chosen artistic skill????
there has to be another way instead of resolutely sticking to a past system that didn't work in the first place.
The record companies represent capitalism at it's most greedy and selfish end. Do ya really think record companies have anything to do with
art
culture
quality of music?????
Nah - it's about the profits baby, but when you charged more for cds than lps...THAT was the beginning of your downfall.
Nah - when the record companies realized that through marketing you can sell shit to a pig...THAT was the beginning of your downfall.
Nah - when human existence first began and the words "me" and "more" were exploited...THAT was the beginning of your downfall!!!

So sayeth Harvey Dog, esq.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
While youtube still exists here's Warren Zevon doing the absolutely brilliant "My Shit's Fucked Up"!!! Genius!!!!!!
Xmas Shoutouts
Xmas Shoutouts
Dudes and dudettes it's the time of year where full of good cheer we belch out civilities towards our families and friends. Here are my belches of the season:
JK: Got your package yesterday and it absolutely blew me away! The Hated Uncles "Special Edition" was so well done and professional you could sell it as a collectible box set - 2 dvds, 2 cds, 1 cd of images, pictures in an awesome package - I absolutely loved it, and showing Tammy old Uncle shows was a blast. I had completely forgotten about the show at the Rat! I cannot thank you enough for all the hard work you did. The card was so well done too! And your kids are beyond adorable!! I'll send you lyrics and I'll put together a couple of cds worth of Harvey Dog's weird and wonderful compilations.
Randy: Man, considering how busy you must be with a new additon to the family, I couldn't believe you had time to send a package. I did not have Japrocksampler in hard cover! And I didn't have about 75% of the music!! If I had 1 album from an artist you somehow sent the other one I needed...amazing! Thank you so much, and I'll continue putting aside tuneage for you. All the best to you and your family in the coming new year!
Andrew: I'm so glad you've kept in touch with me. Thanks! All the best to you and Sandra in the coming year!
Brant: My Nelson, BC music trading buddy. Thanks for all the great tuneage you've sent! All the best to you and yours in the coming year!
Dave: Maybe I'll see you this coming summer! Thanks for keeping the Guru entertained when she was in the Hammer this past summer. She needed a dose of your insanity! We all do!!
Mole: Keep on rockin' (or twangin'?) the hammer with your cult-like personality. Got a couple of things to send your way...eventually...
Mom & Dad: 'tanks...
I'm a bad bad boy...still haven't sent my parents their xmas gifts yet...my excuse is I haven't stopped working this xmas and I'm old and somewhat damaged from years of self-abuse and time passes
and passes
at a rapid rate
ya know -
that's why I'm
always late!
I'm also late with 2 more posts - 1 a miscellaneous babblefest and the other I'll explore the 2008 releases added to the collection.
Merry Xmas everybody!!
i also become a comic strip at the library!
Thoughts on 2 Jobs
I'm settling into my second job now.
life skills
life skills
all the little children needs their life skills!!
The library job is rolling along
books come in
books go out
and I snarf the good ones!!!
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
I still haven't joined Facebook...
there's something about it
that leaves me....
wary of the whole thing...
One of the nice things about living on the coast is the weather. Ya hear people complain about the weather here...too much rain blah blah blah, but it don't compare to the storms and unpredictability of Southern Ontario or the bitter fucking cold [aside: Why Do I Live in Canada, indeed] and snow of Prince George. It's about 5 Celsius now, with the sun trying to shine through. It may rain later, but so what? I don't need no stinking snow shovel!!!
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Amazoni
I'm working on an amazoni order - when you're this isolated, this is how you do your shopping. No record stores, No used LPs, No cd stores, No regular concerts, No touring bands...instead, you spend more time getting together an amazoni order. In addition to some wrestling dvds...ROH, XPW and the Eddie Guerrero and Mr. Perfect collections, I'm thinking of Julian Cope's Japrocksampler and a Psychedelia: Ultimate Anthology dvd with this great lineup:
Atomic Rooster - Black Snake
Bonzo Dog Do Da Band - Here Comes the Equestrian Statue
Curved Air - Vivaldi
Family - Strange Band
Gong - Radio Gnome
Hawkwind - Ejection
Lucifer's Friend - Ride the Sky
Nektar - Ned the Elephant
Renaissance - Island
Soft Machine - The Tale of Taliesin
UFO - Boogie
Van Der Graaf Generator - A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers
I mean, I'm sorry...I can't pass this one up for $15!! Family!!! Gong!!!! Hawkwind!!!! and others I really really enjoy: Atomic Rooster, Lucifer's Friend, VDGG, Soft Machine, Curved Air - damn, there's nothing I'm not at least curious about! I'd love to get Miles Davis: On the Corner Complete Sessions, but at $125 I'll wait until the credit cards are paid off....
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thoughts and Questions Dag-Nabitt
Are the early krautrock and japrock bands - the predecessors to the punk that came after the mid-70s? One John Lydon is a huge krautrock fan!
Is punk anything that defiantly fights against the norm?
The dogs are running rampant in the village of Skidegate!!! Let the dogs run wild and feast on deer carcasses that grace the side of our roads!!!
What the hell were the SWF Sessions in Germany in the early 70s. Coupla Prog & Kollectiv are 2 bands who were involved in these sessions...anyone else?
I wish houses could become clean through the power of thought process....* sigh *
Here's a couple of blogs where you can download and hear some pretty cool tuneage: Soundweave for exposure to new bands doing some great music, and Big O Worldwide for live shows and unreleased stuff.
Still digging into and exploring the wild jazz of Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp and Anthony Braxton (esp. with Corea in Circle!), and now Cecil Taylor. All these gentlemen have large discographies and are well worth researching! Dig in people dig in!!
Has it really been almost 2 weeks since my last real blog!? Man, for the past month I haven't had 2 days off in a row...until this weekend! The joy of 2 jobs, but I ain't complainin'...the jobs are fine.
Another typical ride aboard BC Ferries
HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!!
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
My mp3 walkman helped the ferry ride incredibly…without it man, I'd have been an anxious shaking straitjacket-ready kook looking for the nearest pot bar or digging up mushrooms searching for a ticket to the great unknown…
Here’s what helped me through ferry ride from hell (alphabetically!)….
Acid Mothers Temple: Univers Zen Ou Zero A Zero (2002) this tab of acid is highly recommended for all you acid lovers out there. i happen to love acid very very much!
Blues Creation: Demon and Eleven Children (1971) loved the first listen to this japanese blues monster...i've become a sucker for early 70s japanese rock blues weirdness.
Nick Cave: Dig Lazarus Dig (2008) nick is one of those guys that has aged gracefully and strongly and the bad seeds are the perfect band for him. catchy clever...well, he is nick cave.
thanks MuteChannel
Dungen: 4 (2008) this modern psych band from sweden is excellent. still fairly new to me, but i'll continue checking these guys out.
[aside: I'm listening to Magical Power Mako's self-titled release from 1974 and it's insane!!! I can certainly see why the Acid Mothers named an album after him...amazing fucking shit!!!]
Eulenspygel: 2 (1971) early krautrock...first listen...very good, and i love saying the name u-len-spie-gul - 4 syllables slowly drawn out...come on, do it...it's fun!!! u-len-spie-gul...* sigh * oh yeh...this is their 1st album which is why they call it 2 cause calling it 1 would be too obvious and the drugs were great back then and let's call it 2 cause we are u-len-spie-gul!!!!!
Funkadelic: Music for Your Mother (1992) disc 1 - after witnessing early funkadelic goodness on youtube i couldn't resist putting this on the ol mp3...classic....5 stars....*****....A+....however you want rate this, you gotta rate it a-one 100% funky goodness for all our souls!!! all praise clinton!!!! and fuzzy hawkins and eddie hazel and billy bass nelson and tiki fulwood and raymond davis and tawl ross....one of my top 5 bands of all-time!!!
Hawkwind: Doremi Fasol Latido (1972) another classic i've written about raved about and it still sounds awesome and time we left this world today is one of my all-time fav songs...of all-time...i'm singing it in my head now....
Kin Ping Meh: II (1972) great krautrock! great cover of come together!!! a big help on ferry ride from hell...
Mudhoney: The Lucky Ones (2008) wow!!!! i L O V E D this one!!!!! the title song is awesome...if i did top 10 lists of 2008 this would be on it...heartfelt stooges-like rock that stirs my soup soul...WHAT????? Rate Your Music only has this at 3.29!!!!???? am i deaf??? am i losing it??? nah...this is fantastic and everyone else is insane!!! that's right...in-fucking-sane!!!!!! I am Blogger!!!! I am strong!!!!!
thanks spacemetalizer - live at the Horseshoe in good ol T.O 9/19/2008!
[aside: magical power mako is kicking some serious ass right now!!!]
thanks moto717
Sly & The Family Stone: Essential (2003) disc 2 sly was (is?) great and there's a riot going on is a heavy drug album that makes ya feel like you're strung out alone in a scuzzy apartment with the tape machine going and words slur out with clarity and perception and it all makes dark dark dark sense...pssst...pass the needle will ya?????
[aside: of course, the above is merely metaphorical...]
Yamashita Yosuke: At the Blue Note (1975) disc 2 (of 3) is it yosuke yamashita OR yamashita yosuke [aside: i'm putting it at 70% it's yamashita yosuke but willing to be corrected...also i am absolutely digging magical power mako!!!] great piano based jazz from someone i'm just learning about....
I cannot imagine what life was like pre-mp3...that ferry ride would have increased my medication levels to new highs, instead, I remain calm and relaxed singing songs and dancing on air mattresses on the high high high seas, I mean on the high high high oceans!!!!!
####################
Hey - did ya see Rowdy Roddy Piper sucking on a bong at a nightclub? He's on medical marijuana as a survivor of Hodgkin's Lymphoma & also had a hip replacement...Hey - Roddy, if you're ever on Haida Gwaii come on by for a visit!! Don't forget your medicine!!!!
Odds and Ends Odds and Ends I should drink more Orange Juice!!!!
the power of the funk!!!
Musical Chit Chat
Friday Night August the 14th!!!!
Friday Night August the 14th!!!!
Friday Night August the 14th!!!!
Man - I just finished watching that youtube video of Funkadelic (again and again and again) and it wraps me up and sends me off to different galaxies
and intensities
and emotions
I just wanna fucking
SCREAM
...with passion...
Note to Mole (and everybody else): I listened to JD King & The Coachmen, and thought it was great. I had it on my Walkman and didn't know who it was: I thought - wow, a cool garage instrumental version of "Sweet Jane" - about time. I checked it out and it was JD. Very interesting guy...Thanks Mole!
I'm enjoying Budgie's solid 70s hard rock approach. No frills.
Elephant9: Dodovoodoo (2008) Loved this slice of Norwegian progressive acid organ jazz. Maybe I'm looking under the wrong rocks and swimming the wrong oceans and walking the wrong lanes...BUT I don't hear enough new modern jazz, so this went down beautifully and soothed the soul.
I have discovered lots of great new music (including Elephant9) on the blog called Soundweave. Great job guys! Much appreciated!!
Hey, enough of this modern stuff
hahaha
here's an old obscure classic worth hearing: Euclid: Heavy Equipment (1970) Check out this fuzzed out psych rockin' trip on ChrisGoesRock.
Miscellaneous Chit Chat
I'm glad Obama beat McCain (oh Lord another 8 years of selfish aggressive xenophobic sons of bitches...I think not) and hopefully he lives up to the hype. I'm cynical about politicians in general, but I'm rooting for him...I guess we'll see. I hope he really is about change, and I mean
SERIOUS FUCKING CHANGE
not a little tune up.
I start the Life Skills job on Wednesday and am pretty anxious (and excited) to find out about my responsibilities. The library job is really good.
honestly it's a rolled up cig!!
Our 18 year old cat "Trouble" is still hanging in there. He's started showing his age...then again, I calculate his age to be 90, and if I'm doing as well as him when I'm that age...well, as Barry Manilow once wisely proclaimed:
"It's A Miracle
a true blue spectacle
a miracle come true" - or something like that.
Hope all went well at my friends Andrew and Sandra's wedding on Halloween. Hamilton seems so far away...literally. Hope they had a great time and are enjoying married life!
